Nathanael means "God has given" in Hebrew; Bartholomew describes him as the "son of Tolmai" and was probably his last name. Some more modern scholars do not believe this is the case and maintain that these men are two different people. He made each of us as His unique child and knows what talents we have and what challenges us. Nathanael, one of the first disciples of Jesus, to whom he was brought by his friend Philip (John, i, 43-51).
